Kenyan MPs sweep athletics at EAC Parliamentary Games
By Kenneth Mwenda, December 8, 2025Team Kenya delivered a strong performance in athletics at the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Kampala, Uganda.
Kenyan MPs dominated several events, securing multiple medals across men’s and women’s categories.
The men’s 4x400m relay team, led by Bunge Sports Club Co-Chairperson Vincent Musyoka, won gold in 50.8 seconds. He ran alongside David Ochieng, Dan Wanyama and Bernard Kitur at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole.
Musyoka also won silver in the 100m race with a time of 12.6 seconds, finishing behind Kitur, who took gold in 11.8 seconds.
In the women’s events, Busia County MP Catherine Omanyo claimed gold in the 100m after clocking 16.7 seconds. Senator Esther Okenyuri finished fourth in 20.1 seconds. Team Kenya’s women also secured second place in the 4x100m relay, completing the race in 1:26.0.
Middle-distance events saw Phylis Bartoo win silver in the women’s 1500m with a time of 8:37.8. She also finished fourth in the 400m, recording 1:55.1, while Senator Beth Syengo ran 2:20.3 in a race won by Rwanda’s Mukabilisa Germaine.
Kenya shines in track
In the men’s 400m, Mukunji Gitonga earned bronze with a time of 1:03.9. Joshua Kandie placed fourth in 1:06.05.
In the men’s 1500m, Titus Lotee took silver, finishing in 5:24.0, just behind gold medallist Acan Julius, who ran 5:23.5. John Kagucha added bronze in 5:54.1, followed by Joshua Kimilu (6:22.7), John Paul Mwirigi (7:35.0) and newly elected Baringo Senator Kipruto Chemitei (7:49.7).
The women’s relay team included Irene Kasalu, Betty Maina, Esther Okenyuri and Florence Jematiah. Their efforts helped Team Kenya maintain a strong medal tally across the games.
Team Kenya’s performance at the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games highlights the country’s athletic depth and the commitment of its lawmakers to sports. The Games continue in Kampala, with more events expected over the coming days.
