Kenya Morans win all three matches to top Pool A at Africa 7s
By Kenneth Mwenda, June 21, 2025The Kenya Morans lit up the Rugby Africa Sevens stage on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Mauritius, with a flawless performance in their Pool A matches, showing class, grit, and attacking flair in equal measure.
“Morans finish top of Pool A having secured 3 out of 3 wins at the #Africa7s in Mauritius,” they posted on Kenya Sevens X account on Saturday evening.
They began the day with a clinical 36-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire, making their intentions clear from the outset. Floyd Wabwire got things rolling with a brilliant run down the wing, and Siketi added the extras to take an early 7-0 lead. Wabwire added another try minutes later, and Kenya never looked back.
Dennis Abukuse got on the scoreboard too, converting his own try to extend the lead before half-time. After the break, debutant Matoka scored under the posts, and further tries, including one from Felix Okoth, wrapped up a commanding win.

Next up was Ghana, and the Morans were just as ruthless. They cruised to a 33-0 win, their second straight clean sheet of the tournament. With fluid passing, strong defending, and smart kicking, Kenya looked well-drilled and hungry for more.
Tense derby tests Morans
But the biggest test came in their final pool match against fierce rivals Uganda, the defending champions. Unlike the previous matches, this was a gritty battle. Uganda brought intensity and physicality, matching Kenya blow for blow in the first half.
It took Dennis Abukuse’s powerful break to finally breach Uganda’s line. William Mwanji then sparked a quick move from an interception, leading to George Ooro’s try, which was converted to make it 12-0.
Uganda pulled one back after a loose Kenyan pass, marking the only try Kenya have conceded so far. But thanks to a vital late interception from Brian Mutua, the Morans held on to win 12-5.
The victory means Kenya finish top of Pool A, unbeaten with three wins from three. They now move into the knockout stages, where they’ll face Nigeria in the Cup quarterfinal on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 9:06 AM.
