Kenya make history in Youth Baseball World Cup

Kenya’s historic debut in the World Baseball Championship (WBC) Youth Baseball5 World Cup in Nayarit, Mexico, ended at an impressive fifth place.

The four-day event that concluded on Saturday, September 27, had Kenya announce itself in the global competition, finishing as the best-ranking African side on their debut.

Kenya opened their campaign on the wrong foot, losing 2-0 to Cuba.

Group stage exploits

The team bounced back thanks to a display of defensive grit and quick transitions. edge Korea 2-0 before stretching the lead further with a 2-1 victory over Spain to advance from a tough Group B comprising odds-on favourites Cuba, Spain, and Korea.

In the round of 16, the Peter Okinyi-captained side prevailed over Tunisia in a hotly contested Africa derby to advance.

Team of the Day

The feat saw the side named the Team of the Day in the decisive playoff.

The Joel Wangicho team lost it late against the hosts, who sealed the match in the final tie-breaker set with an 8-3 victory.

In the placement phase, Kenya silenced Lithuania 2-1 to wrap up a remarkable exploit that concluded with a fifth placement.
