Road to Paris: Kenya 7s to face league winners Argentina as Olympic pools are confirmed
World Rugby together with Paris Olympics 2024 have unveiled the pools for the Olympic rugby sevens competitions slated for the French Capital from July 24 to July 27, 2024.
Kenya, the African Champions is in Pool B alongside SVNS League winners and world number two Argentina, Australia, and Samoa.
Pool A will see top seeds New Zealand clash with Ireland, Japan, and eventual World Rugby Sevens Repechage winners South Africa.
Hosts France will be hoping to replicate the blitzing form that saw them win the inaugural HSBC SVNS Grand Final title earlier this month in Pool C encounters against double Olympic champions Fiji, USA, and debutants Uruguay.
Early pool matches
In the third appearance at the Olympic games, the pool games for the rugby sevens will begin two days before the opening ceremony where the preliminaries and quarter-final stages will be played out.
The competition will take a break for the opening ceremony on July 26 before the medal-winning teams are officially unveiled on July 27, 2024.
The women’s tournament will kick off on July 28, 2024, and culminate with the gold and bronze medal matches on July 30.
Kenya in the Olympics
Kenya punched their ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after a 17-12 win against South Africa in the final of Rugby Africa Sevens 2023 in Harare, Zimbabwe to make it their third appearance at the Summer Games.
Shujaa finished 9th at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics where they won two of the five matches. Shujaa also made an appearance in the inaugural Rio Olympics where they finished 11th, recording a solitary win against hosts Brazil.
Paris 2024 will mark rugby sevens’ third appearance at the Olympic Games with this year’s showpiece expected to be one of the most exciting events following the success of the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.
All the action will take place at Stade de France, which was the venue for the opening match and final of the Rugby World Cup 2023.
