Kenya 7s awarded Ksh5.7M as Ababu promises to triple allowances

Kenya 7s is set to receive Ksh5.7 million prize money from the government after their promotion back to the world series.

The Cabinet Secretary of Sports Ababu Namwamba hosted Shujaa for a dinner reception at the Weston Hotel where he reiterated the government’s full support for the team ahead of their 2025 World Series campaign.

“We recognize the value of motivation. We’re rewarding the team with Ksh5.7 million,” Namwamba stated.

“President William Ruto is your number one fan. While in Madrid, he was calling to check up on the team. He was the first to send a congratulatory message after your victory on Sunday."

In his message, the sports cabinet secretary recognized the efforts of the union and more so the technical bench for a merit-based selection, saying Kenya 7's promotion to the world series was the best gift Kenyans could be treated to on Madaraka Day.

“I want to appreciate the leadership of KRU led by Sasha Mutai. The magic of performing is by doing the right thing. Selecting players on merit will bring great results. Shujaa is a team built on merit.

“The players have made sacrifices to represent Kenya across the globe. That is why we want to celebrate them today. The success of this team is a result of great effort behind the scenes. I stand here as a proud and grateful CS for Sports Kenya for everyone’s input.

“The thirteen players who played in Madrid are the reason we’re all here. Hongera Shujaa. They gave us the best gift for Kenya’s 61st Madaraka Day,” he added.

Ababu also took time to recognise the Kenyan fans who turned up in large numbers to support Kenya 7s. The Kenyan corner has gained popularity in the World Series for their liveliness and decibels wherever Shujaa plays.

“We salute all the Kenyan fans who have traveled all over the world supporting the team. Your presence in those stadiums is felt globally."

Kenya 7s will shift their focus to the Olympics amid calls for better athlete welfare across all disciplines. Ababu stated the ministry’s commitment to addressing the issue saying all allowances for athletes representing the country will be tripled to ensure fair compensation for sacrifices made.
