Kayci Odhiambo reflects on tight FKF PL league race as AFC Leopards regain top spot

By , January 8, 2026

AFC Leopards midfielder Kayci Odhiambo has pointed out the significance of his club’s Wednesday victory over Nairobi United as crucial given the tight competition at the top of the league table.

Leopards approached the clash against the Naibois hoping to make amends after suffering a shocking start to the year in the defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz.

The team’s response was superb, as an own goal from Dancan Omalla and Kelly Okonji Madada’s strike confirmed the crucial victory and return to the spot at the helm of the standings.

The versatile player expressed his elation with the win that had them back to dictating standings from the summit.

Tight proceedings atop FKF PL table

“It was important that we win the game. We needed to restore the gap as the race remains tight at the top. We gave all we had and got the results.”

“Going forward, we are hopeful we can continue in this run and stretch our winning streak,” he added.

The victory was Ingwe’s first of the year, coming days after the high-flying Fred Ambani’s charges had faltered in their quest to widen the gap at the top after losing to Kakamega Homeboyz in an enthralling Ingo Derby a couple of days ago.

The redeeming display saw Leopards dislodge Gor Mahia, who thrashed Kariobangi Sharks on Tuesday, to temporarily move to the summit.

Tight FKF PL race

The triumphant outcome continues the tight jostling for the spaces at the top end of the league, and the race for the 2025/26 season intensifies.

Ingwe had edged past Bidco United to shoot to the apex as the turn of the new year finalised their 2025 action as the log leaders.

The former giants, however, did not last a matchday at the top, as a defeat to Homeboyz saw them lose their spot to the eventual vanquishers, who moved to the top, albeit on a superior goal-scored basis.

Gor Mahia’s emphatic win on Tuesday sent Charles Akonnor’s charges leapfrogging three teams ranked above them, before Ingwe’s latest win assured them their spot back.
