Kakamega School brush aside opponents to storm into County games
By Collins Amanga, June 19, 2023Kakamega School’s Green Commandos, the record-holding national football champions, have advanced to the Kakamega County Secondary School games following their victorious performance in the sub-county tournament held at the Kakamega School Grounds over the weekend.
The Green Commandos triumphed over Matioli Secondary with a 2-0 victory, securing their place in the county games. Matioli, as the runners-up, will also join them in the upcoming county competition.

The Green Commandos showcased their attacking prowess throughout the tournament, demonstrating their dominance by not conceding a single goal.
Nelson Ombeva and Christopher Koloti were instrumental in securing the team’s triumph, with both players finding the back of the net in the final match.

In the semi-final, the Green Commandos who were in impressive form, defeated Ikonyero 2-0, courtesy of goals from Koloti and Moses Mulekano.
The quarterfinal match proved to be a remarkable spectacle as the Green Commandos unleashed a devastating offensive display, overpowering Rosterman with a resounding 13-0 victory.
Koloti showcased his scoring prowess by netting four goals, while Ombeva (also known as Kadenge), Mulekano, Jack Okello, Glen Otieno, and Clement Kawere each contributed a goal to the team’s astounding triumph.
Kakamega School in group stage
In the group stages matches played on Saturday, they grabbed a 2-0 over Eshiru Secondary School, thrashed Ematietie 4-0 brushed aside Mwangaza Secondary 3-0.
With their sights now set on the competitive county games, the Green Commandos are eager to avoid any disappointments.
Last year, they were eliminated in the semi-final stage, suffering a 2-1 defeat against the surprise package of the tournament, Mwitoti, who eventually lost in a penalty shootout to Shanderema after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

In 2019, the Green Commandos faced struggles at the county games, failing to progress beyond the group stages.
Determined to rise above their previous setbacks, the team aims to reclaim their glory after their last title triumph in 2018.
14th title
During that victorious campaign, Kakamega School secured their 14th title by defeating Olbolosat from the Central Region with a solitary goal at the Hill School in Eldoret in matches played in July.
The winning goal in the 2018 final was scored by Henry Atola Meja, who is now based at AIK. Meja’s contribution, alongside the presence of Gor Mahia’s Alpha Onyango, captain Evans Odhiambo, and Joshua Otieno in the squad, played a pivotal role in Kakamega School’s championship victory.
Their rugby team has also qualified for the County games after winning all their matches.
