Gor Mahia recovered from their CAF Confederation Cup disappointment to thrash league debutants Vihiga Bullets 3-0 away at Bukhungu Stadium yesterday to move joint top of the table on 17 points, with a match at hand.
George “Blackberry” Odhiambo rolled down the years to open the scores with an individual effort in the fifth minute, while Boniface Omondi scored the second goal in the 84th minute and Ugandan import Peter Lwasa finished sealed the victory with a 90th minute strike. Blackberry was playing his first match since returning to Gor from Tusker, after recovering from a knee injury sustained in a training session on the first week he rejoined the multiple league champions.
The result condemned the bottom placed league newcomers to their sixth consecutive loss in top flight football. It was Gor Mahia’s most potent win ever in the Premier League this season as they now have 10 goals in seven matches having only conceded twice.
The Abdallah Juma-coached Bullets are now on a single point in eight matches and therefore can be perceived as early candidates for relegation in what has been a horror show in the top tier campaign so far.
K’Ogalo endured a frustrating match after their early goal by Blackberry up until the final third of the match which saw the side coached by Mark Harrison pick-up momentum especially through Austin Odhiambo and Alpha Onyango. The other positive for Gor Mahia who prior to this match had not won two consecutive matches was that they did not concede despite having the two captains Harun Shakava and Philemon Otieno rested and not making the traveling squad. Meanwhile, after five games of pain, finally AFC Leopards got back to their groove after posting only their second win of the campaign courtesy of a Washington Munene 25th minute free-kick.
