By Faith Lagat, September 5, 2025Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has unveiled his starting lineup as Kenya braces for a decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gambia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm on Friday, September 5, 2025, with the nation’s eyes fixed on the Stars as they seek to secure a crucial three points in Group F.
The clash comes on the back of a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg, where Kenya staged a spirited fightback to snatch a valuable point.
McCarthy has retained a balance of experience and youthful energy in his squad, with Michael Olunga captaining the side.
The starting XI includes Omondi (30), Abud (C, 3), S. Owino (25), R. Onyango (16), Sichene (19), Odada (11), T. Ouma (10), Abuyo (9), Olunga (14), and Osoro (22).
On the bench are Faruk, Bwire, Omija, Kibwage, Bandi, Manzur, Alpha, Nabwire, Stanley, Ogam, Job, and Muchiri, ready to step in if needed.

National pride
The announcement has sparked excitement both on and off the pitch, with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed rallying Kenyans to back the team.
“Best of luck to The Harambee Stars in today’s World Cup qualifiers against Gambia at Kasarani. You have our full support, and thousands of Kenyans will be at Kasarani to cheer you on #GoHarambeeStars!” he posted on X.
The Kenya Tourism Board also joined in, reminding fans of the pride at stake. “HARAMBEE STARS, TUPO PAMOJA! Today our stars take on Gambia in the World Cup qualifiers! Let’s show the world what Kenyan spirit looks like!” the board declared, highlighting the sense of unity behind the squad.
With Kasarani expected to be a sea of red, green, and black, the Stars will be banking on a charged atmosphere to push them past their opponents.
Gambia’s threat looms
Standing in their way is a formidable Gambia side, spearheaded by some of Africa’s rising stars. Yankuba Minteh, fresh from a Man of the Match performance for Brighton against Manchester City, carries pace and flair that could trouble Kenya’s backline.
Musa Barrow, who has already struck nine goals in the Saudi Pro League and netted a brace against Kenya in the first leg, remains their deadliest weapon. Abdoulie Jallow, now at Swiss side Servette FC, adds creativity in midfield under coach John McKinstry.
As the clock ticks down to kick-off, the Harambee Stars carry the hopes of millions. A win at Kasarani would not only boost their World Cup dream but also reaffirm Kenya’s place among Africa’s rising football nations.
