Marcelo: Harambee Stars defender completes transfer to Poland

By , January 12, 2024

Harambee Stars defender Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma has completed a transfer move from AIK of Sweden to Rakow Czestochowa of Poland.

The move ends speculation that had mounted on the possible next destination for the fullback, who had only one year remaining on his AIK contract.

Marcelo, as Ouma is popularly known in football circles, is the second signing for the Polish Premier Football League club in the January transfer window.

“We take immense pleasure in unveiling Erick Otieno as our second winter signing of the season. With a stellar track record in his position during his time in Sweden, Erick brings a wealth of talent and experience to our squad.

“His arrival aligns seamlessly with our club’s philosophy,” Rakow Czestochowa said in a statement.

Ouma’s new club explained why they settled on the former Gor Mahia defender as one of their top transfer targets in this window.

“Erick is characterized by his exceptional speed, aggressive approach, and unwavering intensity on the field.

“His proficiency with both feet, coupled with his adept ball-handling skills, positions him as a versatile option for us. As a shuttle player, he will be a valuable asset on both flanks within our system,” the club’s statement added.

Expectations on Marcelo

The new club for the Harambee Star is hopeful that the defender will help propel them to new heights of excellence and success.

“We eagerly anticipate witnessing Erick don our jersey. His eagerness to vie for more titles and showcase his prowess on the European stage resonates with our ambitions.

“Erick’s commitment aligns seamlessly with our quest for excellence, and we are confident he will play a pivotal role in our continued success,” it concluded.

Marcelo’s move is set to generate a debate on whether it is the right move for the defender. Others anticipated a move to one of the five big European leagues and thus will view the Poland move as a dropdown for the former Kolkheti Poti star.

The fullback had been linked with a possible transfer to Ligue 1 in France, but, for now, that will not happen, and it can wait.
