Gor Mahia vs Tusker: Preview, head-to-head stats and probable line-ups
By Joel Sang, January 19, 2024
Gor Mahia’s clash against Tusker will be the highlight of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League on week 19.
Gor Mahia, the defending champions, are the only side yet to lose a single game this term, and on the other hand, Tusker have managed to stabilise and break into the top three.
Match Preview
Going into the Saturday clash at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, the Brewers and their rivals are buoyed by the wins they posted on the last matchday; Tusker were 3-1 winners over Sofapaka, while Gor Mahia held tight for an eventual 1-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks.
K’Ogalo have shown resilience, especially at the back, as they have only conceded seven goals in 18 games. However, the solidity of their backline will come under massive test when they face Erick Kapaito, who has been a key goalscorer for the former champions and has registered six so far.
Tusker’s resurgence, on the other hand, has been massively aided by the fact that they have grown into a solid unit despite struggling in the opening weeks. Their defence is among the top three best units, as they have conceded 12 goals.
Their striking department has also grown into a lethal unit, and so far they have scored 23 goals in total.
When they face Gor Mahia, Tusker’s defensive department will have to be on top to keep at bay Benson Omala, who is the leading top scorer.
Head-to-head stats
In the last five games, Gor Mahia have had a marginal advantage over Tusker, as they have recorded two wins compared to Tusker’s one.
2-1 and 1-0 victories in August and October 2023 over the Ruaraka-based club were one of the victories that propelled Gor Mahia to the title last season.
Tusker managed a 2-0 win over K’Ogalo in April 2022, when they went on to claim the title.
The other two matches out of the five ended in goalless draws, pointing to the fact that even the upcoming duel might be a tightly close contest.
