Gor Mahia train their guns on Mathare United in Kasarani
By Charles.Thuku, March 1, 2023Despite being placed at the lower echelons of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League, Mathare United are not pushovers and this is what table-topping Gor Mahia has acknowledged going into the two teams mid-week fixture at Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) today.
Gor coach Jonathan Mckinstry has advised his charges against underrating Mathare United and noted that the most important thing is to remain focused if the team is to maintain its consistency in the league.“We are not taking anything for granted. This is one match that is as important as any other in the top-tier league and it would be wrong for us to think that a win is a foregone conclusion,” offered Mackinstry who has instilled a tactical master class at the multiple champions ever since he took over the coaching reins.
He added;” I must say I’m elated with my team’s mental strength even against determined teams. This is good for a team chasing for the Premier League title,” said Mckinstry after his team beat Kenya Police 2-1 last weekend.
Gor will build a healthy seven-point lead should they beat Mathare who are only too eager to haul themselves out of the relegation zone.
However, if Gor’s performance in the match against Police is anything to go by, they should not have difficulty prevailing over Mathare and especially when the team is inspired by red-hot striker Benson Omala who is the leading scorer in the league with 13 goals.
Omala, a box-to-box striker, is one man Mathare United’s defence should strive to give tight marking lest he spoils their evening.
But then, Mathare subjected Wazito to a torrid time last weekend in a shock 1-0 win and Gor’s defence should equally be on full alert to avoid having their egos bruised by the slum boys.
Perhaps to put things in perspective, Mathare also has dangerous players like Donald Ange and Daniel Otieno who are expected to lead from the front in the team’s quest to secure a decent result.
Meanwhile, Wazito faces Kariobangi Sharks at Moi Stadium in Kisumu while FC Talanta comes face to face with Vihiga Bullets at Kasarani Annex.
