Gor Mahia coach terms first-half display against Nzoia as worst since joining club

Gor Mahia Head Coach Johnathan Mckinstry has expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance in the FKF Premier League match against Nzoia Sugar on Saturday.

Despite staging a comeback to secure a point after trailing 2-0 by the 40th minute, Mckinstry was critical of the first-half display, labelling it as the worst since he joined the club in 2022.

Gor Mahia coach comments

“The players know there was quite a strong language used at halftime in the dressing room. The first half against Nzoia was the worst we have played since I joined the club. It was pathetic, and we all have to take responsibility for that as the coaching staff, not the players alone,” Mckinstry told Gor Mahia TV.

The coach expressed dissatisfaction with how his team defended the opening two goals of the match.

He acknowledged Nzoia Sugar for capitalizing on their chances but highlighted defensive lapses that led to the goals.

“Fair play to Nzoia Sugar for taking their chances. For the first goal, I’m not sure if there is a player who challenged for the header at the second post. The second, we were dragged out of position, and it was a tap,” Mckinstry explained.

While acknowledging an improved performance in the second half, Mckinstry emphasized that giving opponents a 2-0 headstart is not acceptable.

Gor Mahia coach relief

He expressed disappointment at dropping two points but also relief at salvaging a point when facing the possibility of losing all.

“We are not pleased with a point because we want to pick maximum points, especially against a team fighting relegation. But a 2-2 after being 2-0 down after 40 minutes, you have to say, okay, it was a bad day. When you get points on a bad day, you move on and get ready for the next game,” he concluded.

Gor are top of the log with 28 points.
