Gaspo’s double stumble revives Vihiga Queens’ hopes in women league home stretch challenge

By , May 22, 2023

The quick faltering of Gaspo Women FC in two consecutive matches, has meant their earlier momentum has been cut with defending Champions Vihiga Queens FC now back to familiar territory, albeit, with a four point cushion.

Vihiga beat visiting Nakuru City Queens 2-1 at Mumias Complex Grounds Saturday to move to 52 points in the log off 21 matches played. A brace by Anitah Namata in the 2nd minute and 78th minutes of play was just enough to give Coach Boniface Nyamunyamu a reprieve despite a consolation in the 46th minute courtesy of an own goal occasioned by Kebebi Robai.

City Queens are stuck in fifth place with 32 points off 21 matches played. So far they have accumulated nine wins in 21 matches with goal difference of +8.Their immediate prior match, the Chrispin Walonga coached side lost 3-2 to Trans Nzoia Falcons 3-2 away in Kitale.

Meanwhile Gaspo FC under former Harambee Stars Coach Jacob Ghost Mulee seem to be tiring after their second draw in succession. Their 2-2 draw against fourth place Wadadia FC meant the immediate previous table-toppers are now in second place with 48 points off 21 matches. At midweek, Gaspo had also tied 1-1 with Ulinzi Starlets who are currently in third place with 42 points after their 11-0 drubbing of relegation bound Kangemi Ladies FC. Gaspo have 14 wins under their belt with a goal difference of +42 thus far.

Elsewhere Zetech Sparks’ mini-resurgence continued Sunday following their 3-1 win over Kisumu All-Starlets FC in a game played at GEMS Cambridge Grounds. Sparks who are seventh in the log with 29 points had their goals courtesy of Susan Nyumba in the 39th minute, Fridhaus Abdalla in the 66th minute and Puren Alukwe in the 85th minute of play. The consolation by the Lakeside team came against the run of play Lydia Awuor in the 64th minute. Starlets are now still stuck in 10th place and in the red zone following only 23 points in 21 matches being collected so far.

In another game in the WPL Championship, Trans Nzoia Falcons FC got the better of fellow western rivals Bunyore Starlets FC 2-1 at Kitale Stadium. Goals by Linda Kihara in the sixth minute of play via a penalty kick and Joyce Makungu in extra time (94th minute) was just enough to get them acros the line.Starlets had their consolation in the eighth minute of play by Lucy Achando. The win got Falcons to 29 points and ninth in the log off 21 matches whereas Starlets on the other hand remain eighth with 25 points in the bag.
