FKF boss steps in to help NSL clubs struggling financially
By Joel Masibo, September 23, 2025Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has called upon corporate bodies to move forward and partner with the country’s National Super League clubs ahead of the new NSL season.
In a statement dated Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the FKF boss said timely partnerships play a critical role in helping the second-tier league clubs prepare adequately for their respective matches.
Mohammed’s sentiments come shortly after the National Super League clubs Kisumu All Stars, Migori Youth FC, and 3k FC secured sponsorships with a local gaming firm on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Hussein Mohammed also extended his gratitude to the betting company for backing the 3 NSL clubs with the partnerships as they gear up for the new season. The country’s NSL competition, comprising 20 clubs, is regarded as the toughest football competition in the country, as participating teams traverse the whole nation in honouring matches with many lacking shirt sponsors.
Financial hurdles in NSL
The clubs often turn to their fan bases and community leaders for financial support to honour their fixtures throughout the season while seeking promotion to the Kenyan Premier League.
As financial constraints remain the greatest challenge facing many NSL clubs, Hussein Mohammed acknowledged the fact before calling on financial bailout from corporate partners.
”Both the National Super League and its member clubs have historically struggled with attracting sponsorships. It is now encouraging to see corporates come in to support teams within the NSL. We call upon more corporates to join forces with betting firms and uplift other NSL teams, as this is vital for the growth and development of Kenyan football,” Mohammed said.
The betting firm injected more than Ksh20 million into the three beneficiaries ahead of the start of the 2025-2026 NSL season. The partnership dictates that each club will receive a tune of Ksh5 million, while also committing an additional Ksh1 million for club merchandise over the next year.
Upon signing the sponsorship contracts at a Nairobi Hotel, 3K FC Assistant Coach, Moses Munene, was elated, saying the new sponsorship deal would help the Embu club pay their players without delay. The club is among over 14 NSL clubs that have been playing at the grassroots level without commercial partners.
“This is a massive boost for the team and the players. For the very first time, our players will be on a payroll,” Munene said.
3KK FC qualified for the NSL football after earning promotion as champions of the FKF Division One in the 2023/2024 season.
