Etale tips Alpha Onyango, Austin Odhiambo for European moves after CHAN
By Lutta Njomo, August 9, 2025Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Communications Director Philip Etale has backed Gor Mahia midfield maestro Austin Odhiambo to attract interest from clubs abroad after the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In a statement on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Etale expressed optimism that Austin and his fellow teammate, Alpha Onyango, would get a chance to showcase their talents in Europe after the biennial continental championship.
“After CHAN competition, I expect Alpha Onyango and Austin Odhiambo to join big clubs in Europe,” Etale’s statement read in part.

Austin’s run
Austin has been instrumental in Benni McCarthy’s charges in the first two CHAN matches. The Gor Mahia attacker has reminded people why he was crowned the FKF Premier League MVP in 2023/2024, as he has scored both of the Harambee Stars’ goals in the tournament so far, netting the winner against DR Congo and finding the back of the net again in the 1-1 draw with Angola at Kasarani Stadium.

In the first match, Austin danced through defenders before slotting home a left-footed shot on the bottom corner, earning Harambee Stars’ first win in front of a sizeable crowd at Kasarani.
Against Angola, Austin stepped up to take a penalty after he was brought down in the box. The midfield maestro sent Angola’s goalkeeper the wrong way to level the scores for the home side.
Alpha Onyango
On the other hand, midfielder Alpha Onyango was the Man of the Match in the game against DR Congo. His stellar performance in the middle of the park proved enough to help Harambee Stars earn their first three points.
Besides his outstanding performance with the national team, Alpha has also established himself as a key playmaker, contributing to several goals in the past seasons for Gor Mahia.

His ability to dictate play while chipping in with crucial goals has made him one of the most complete midfielders in the Kenyan Premier League.
“Representing Kenya is everything… but I am not done. My dream is to play in a top European league —to show the world what Kenyan talent can do. I want to keep improving, make my family proud and show young players that dreams do come true,” he said during a recent interview with a local TV station.
Next up, Harambee Stars will be looking to extend their perfect run against Morocco on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
