Driftwood 7s: Oilers set for high-flying KCB test in quarters
By Luke Oluoch, July 27, 2025Menengai Oilers will be out to pit their wits against KCB Rugby Club as the showdown of the Driftwood Seven enters the money stage with the main cup quarterfinal ties going down this Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Mombasa Sports Club.
Oilers, under the tutelage of former international Gibson Weru, will be out to rectify issues following a rather inconsistent streak on the opening day of the ongoing competition.
Despite opening their campaign on a winning note in a 19-0 thrashing of Stallions rugby, Oilers were forced to dig deep and show grit in their second clash against a hard-fighting Kabarak University.
The club managed to take the match on a 19-14 margin.
Their luck, however, ran out in the final group tie, where proceedings proved uphill against Strathmore Leos, who topped the tie on a 14-5 victory.
Meanwhile, the Nakuru-based team will also be keen to record a change of fortunes against the high-flying Bankers, who enjoy a better head-to-head.
The latter enjoy a superior head-to-head record against the Oilers, with the Oilers having only 2 wins in their last 10 encounters. In their recent match in the Kenya Cup semi-final, Menengai Oilers secured a 31-8 victory over KCB.

Before that, Bankers proved the bogey team against the Nakuru-based club, hammering the team 62-15 in a Kenya Cup duel at the Nakuru Showground in 2023.
The clash then saw an in-form KCB extending their win in the current 2022/23 Kenya Cup season to nine wins out of nine games.
In another clash, Kenya Harlequins battle it out against Nakuru Rugby Football Club as Kabras Sugar lock horns against Masinde Muliro University in a western derby tie.
