Dorcus Ewoi opens up rollercoaster 2nd finish in battle with Faith Kipyegon
By Luke Oluoch, September 17, 2025Kenyan silver medallist in the African Championship games, Dorcus Ewoi, has opened up on her dramatic second-place finish in the World Athletics Championship 1500 m race on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan.
Ewoi mounted a stunning performance to finish second behind Faith Kipyegon, clocking 3:52.02 as Kenya went close to almost a clean sweep in the race.
The duo delivered a Kenya 1-2 finish in the women’s 1500m and pushed Team Kenya’s medal count to five at the ongoing World Championships.
Nelly Chepchirchir came in at fourth after finishing just behind Jessica Hull, whose battling sprint saw her wrap up the podium.
Speaking after the race, Ewoi admitted she was solely focused on proving herself on the global stage after motivating words from her coach.
“The point was to make it to the final and then put myself in it and see what happens. Coming to get a Personal Best (PB) and reaching this stage. I feel blessed,” she stated.

She spoke on the rollercoaster finish that equally surprised Kipyegon, who only later learnt that her compatriot had scooped the silver medal.
“I saw myself getting a medal towards the end in the last 100 metres. It looked ugly in the end. Before that, I almost broke down in the last 300 metres, but I knew someone would pass me if I quit. I pushed to the line. I knew I was also in for a personal best, and I got a bronze,” she stated.
In what was a memorable start to her World Championship debut, Ewoi ran in an impressive time of 3.52.02 to beat Australia’s Olympic silver medallist, Hull, and finish behind the evergreen Kipyegon.
