By Luke Oluoch, September 22, 2025Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya has signalled the government plans to enhance athletes’ welfare and support through revised policies and better training programs.
In a statement on Monday, September 22, 2025, Mvurya highlighted the government’s commitment to follow up on enhancing sporting excellence by empowering the athletes and ecosystem in Kenya.
He also noted that they will be pursuing different incentive packages under the Sport Policy to motivate the country’s sporting heroes.
“We are rolling out revised and enhanced welfare and incentive packages under the Sports Policy to motivate athletes and safeguard their well-being during and after their careers, all aimed at building a sustainable and empowering ecosystem for athletics in Kenya,” part of the CS’s statement read.
Following the triumphant showing in the World Athletics Championship, where Kenya finished in second place, Mvurya stressed that the ministry would follow up the success with better policies to motivate the athletes.

2029 WAC Bid
He also spoke about Kenya’s bid to host the upcoming 2029 games, stressing that the opportunity to host the world’s biggest athletics event would further showcase Kenya’s talent.
“We also look ahead with determination to our bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. Bringing the event to Africa for the first time would be a historic milestone, and Kenya stands ready to deliver it,” he added.
He expressed optimism in Kenya’s capacity to host the major event following the successful staging of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), hosting the IAAF World Under-18 Championships in 2017, and hosting the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2021.
Kenya triumphs in Tokyo
Mvurya hailed the opportunities offered at both stages to provide athletes with the requisite experience to excel both nationally and internationally.
