Coach Kevin Wambua makes 2 changes as he unveils Shujaa’s squad for Perth 7s

By , January 15, 2025

Shujaa Head Coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, unveiled his squad for the Perth 7s tournament in Australia.

Wambua made two changes by recalling Vincent Onyala and Brian Tanga to bolster his squad ahead of their third outing on the World Sevens series.

Onyala who had previously co-captained Shujaa had been omitted from the previous outings, Dubai 7s and Cape Town 7s, due to a contractual dispute with Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).

Following the dispute, Onyala opted out despite coach Wambua expressing interest in including him in the last two tournaments.

On the other hand, Brian Tanga’s inclusion in the squad followed his successful recovery which had sidelined him from national duty for months.

The unveiling of the squad followed an intensive one-week residential training camp to refine their strategy ahead of the competition.

Speaking during the team naming, co-captain Samuel Asati stated that the camp was very beneficial for the team.

“Having the boys in one place focusing on training brought us together, we’re able to work on the tactical bits of the sport and this has improved our performance. Additionally, having Onyala and Tanga back is a plus as they bring in a lot of leadership within the set-up together with Tony,” Asati stated.

Shujaa is in Pool C alongside Fiji, New Zealand and Uruguay and they will kick off their Perth 7s campaign on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 6:00 am against New Zealand.

At 10:59 am they will wrap up their day with action against Fiji. On Saturday at 7:00 am, Shujaa will lock horns with Uruguay to complete their Pool matches.

Heading into the Perth 7s, Shujaa kicked off the World Series at 10th place in Dubai where they gathered 3 points.

In the Cape Town 7s, Kevin Wambua’s men stormed into the Cup quarterfinals where they lost 14-26 to Argentina in the 5th Place semifinal.

Dropping to 7th place playoff, they emerged victorious with a 32-17 victory over Great Britain.

Kevin Wambua will be looking to post stellar results when they head to Australia as they sit 9th in the log.
