2025 World Athletics Championships

The 2025 World Athletics Championships will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21 at the Japan National Stadium.

This marks Tokyo’s second time hosting the event, the first being in 1991, and Japan’s third overall, following Osaka in 2007. Over 2,000 athletes from approximately 200 countries will compete in 49 disciplines, including track and field events, marathons, and race walking.

Notable events include the men’s and women’s 100m finals on the second day and the mixed 4x400m relay final on the first day.

The championships will feature morning sessions for road events and evening sessions for most finals, with a packed final day including nine track finals, concluding with the men’s 4x100m relay.

Qualification is based on entry standards and world rankings, with about 50% of athletes qualifying through each method.

The qualifying window for marathons and the 35km race walk runs from November 5, 2023, to May 4, 2025, and for other events like the 10,000m and relays from February 25, 2024, to August 24, 2025.

The World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou will serve as a qualifier for relay events, with the top 14 teams securing spots.
