Boxing federation confident in Kenya’s squad for Maputo
By Charles.Thuku, September 2, 2022Failure by Kenya to send a full squad to the Africa Championships slated for September 8-18 in Maputo, Mozambique will not be a deterrent to the country bagging medals, a top official of the Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) has said.
BFK Secretary David Munuhe told boxing fans in the country not to press the panic buttons, saying the team possessed the requisite skills to stage a cameo show in Mozambique.
“So far, so good. The progress in training by the pugilists is commendable and the fact that we shall not be represented by all the boxers should not make us lose hope,”
BFK was forced to whittle down members of Hit Squad, as the national boxing team is fondly referred to, to seven following lack of enough funds.
The National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) philanthropy then came in handy when it donated Sh 2.5 Million to cater for the team’s participation in the continental championships
A total of 29 boxers have been training at Mathare Depot under Coach Benjamin Musa assisted by John Waweru and are expected to be further cut down to 24. The team leaves for Mozambique on September 7.
BFK Communications Director Duncan “Sugar Ray” Kuria urged the Hit Squad members to replicate the performance in the Africa Zone 3 Championship in Kinshasa, DR Congo recently.
“The team in Kinshasa did well and it’s upon those who will make it to Mozambique to fly the country’s flag even higher and I know they are capable of doing it,” said Kuria.
while referring to the event in which Kenya scooped a total of 18 medals: six gold, five silver, and seven bronze.
