Boniface Muchiri: Balancing military duty and football takes discipline

By , August 18, 2025

Harambee Stars assistant captain Boniface Muchiri has opened up about the unique challenge of balancing his dual roles as a professional footballer and a Kenya Army soldier, saying discipline is the key that keeps him steady in both.

Muchiri, who turns out for Kenya Defence Forces side Ulinzi Stars, says his life revolves around two uniforms, one in the barracks and the other on the football pitch. For him, both roles carry a single mission, which is service to the nation.

Speaking on a local television on Sunday night, August 17, 2025 after inspiring Harambee Stars to a vital 1-0 over Zambia in the final outing of Group A at the ongoing African Nations Championship at the Kasrani Stadium, Muchiri said he is elated to fight for the country in two different capacities.

“I am a soldier in the Kenyan Army and also a footballer. I am playing for Ulinzi Stars. For me, it’s about the two uniforms, one for the job and one for the field. With both, I have got one mission, to fight for my country, and that is what I am doing,” Muchiri explained.

The versatile winger, known for his pace and precision on the ball, stressed that his patriotism is not limited to the game but extends to his daily duties in uniform.

“Given the opportunity, I do my best 100%. I always stay ready so as not to get ready. My country comes first, the rest will follow,” he said.

Muchiri’s sentiments come at a time when national service and sports have increasingly intersected in Kenya, with Ulinzi Stars standing out as one of the few teams run under military structures.

For the midfielder, the military code of discipline is the same principle he applies on the pitch to push himself and inspire teammates.

Boniface Muchiri’s dedication to serving the country has seen football fans calling upon military top brass to consider promoting the Harambee Stars ace in the Kenya Defense Forces ranks for his exemplary performance at CHAN 2024.

The Ulinzi Stars player is regarded among the key figures expected to steer Kenya past Madagascar in the CHAN 2024 quarter-finals on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as Kenya seeks to win their maiden CHAN title on home soil.
