Ex-Kenyan professional footballer Boniface Ambani has criticised the Caretaker Committee over the prize money they awarded to FKF Premier League Champions Tusker FC.

This criticism comes after the transition committee announced on Saturday that the winner will receive Ksh2million in prize money, and Tusker were awarded a trophy and a Ksh2million cheque after successfully defending their title against Posta Rangers.

The current prize money is three million less than what the club received after winning the league title in 2020/21.

While congratulating the Brewers on their victory, Ambani, who played for the team from 2004 to 2006, took to his social media to condemn the committee stating that the players deserved more.

"Tusker FC, are The Kenya Premier League CHAMPIONS 2021/22 Season. Congratulations! But caretaker Committee, you could have done better than this. Prize money at Kshs2M?" he posed.

He also noted that the committee should have advised the Ministry of Sports appropriately on the prize money, adding that they should have considered options such as drawing money from the Sports Fund Kitty.

"You guys could have advised the ministry better. You have done your part to make sure the league ends properly. Yes. But the price cash for those young men who have toiled the whole year, team's preparations for the season, to me personally it's way way way below. As a ministry, you could have raided the Sports funds kitty. Think about it. It's never too late," Ambani said.

"Otherwise Tusker FC and the entire crew, Congratulations. Kakamega Homeboyz, you live to fight another day. Great experience," he added.

Netizens echo Ambani

Similarly, the 2020/2021 Women Premier League (WPL) season also caused a public debate after Thika Queens were awarded kSh350,000 as the prize money for their efforts.

This season has seen an improvement, with the 2021/22 Champions Vihiga Queens receiving a kshs1 million cash prize.
