Awiti wins sixth leg of Safaricom Golf tour in Eldoret

Nyanza Club golfer Alice  Awiti was the winner of the sixth leg Safaricom Golf Tour at par 71 Eldoret Golf Club on Saturday.

Awiti carded 49 Stableford points in the thrilling event to emerge victorious.

She was targeting a win after missing the chance last month at home club in Kisumu. Her mission bore fruits as she now qualifies for the grand finale that will be held at the Vipingo Ridge Golf Club.

Awiti had a false start after a scratch of hole in one on a par 5, but she went on to clinch the title in a tournament that attracted 141 golfers drawn from various clubs across the country.

“I did not know that I would emerge the winner in this tournament after I scratched the first tee, not just that but three of them but I recovered well, maintained my consistency with the rest of the holes doing five pars and a number of birdies for the title,” Awiti said.

Playing off handicap 54, she added that having the high handicap played a critical role against her opponents.

“It was advantageous to me because my handicap is a bit higher so i get more points than the rest of the golfers who are rated less,” she said adding that coming from Kisumu and winning in Eldoret was a personal initiative.
