Athletics legends asked to mentor youngsters

The Secretary Administrative in the State Department of Sports Evans Achoki has given a rallying call to Kenya’s athletics legends to offer mentorships to youngsters in the sport to ensure continued dominance globally.
Achoki was speaking early today at Talanta Plaza Nairobi as he flagged off Athletics Kenya Masters team that is heading to Gothenburg, Sweden where they take part in the 25th edition of the World Masters Athletics Championships that runs from August 13 to August 25.
“You are the legends of athletics in this country and we acknowledge what you have done for this country. We are sending you out there to Sweden so you can represent us well as you have always done. As legends, kindly help in areas of talent identification and nurturing so that we can continue excelling globally. I know, when you are doing your morning or your evening runs, there might be one or two youngsters who would wish to join you and be shown the way; please embrace them and show them the right tactics.”
Achoki who was representing the newly sworn-in Cabinet Secretary for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen further urged the former world-beaters to share financial advice with the current generation of local stars who are enjoying their prime in the field.
Athletics Kenya Vice President Paul Mutwii noted the importance of having the Athletics Masters in the country.
“The composition of this group is actually what made Kenya known world-wide as far as athletics is concerned. Therefore this organization is very vital as part of the Athletics Kenya fraternity.”
Athletics Kenya Masters’ chairperson Stephen Ole Marai tipped the team to excel in the Sweden assignment.
The Athletics Kenya Masters team is expected to travel tomorrow evening to Gothenburg and this will be their fourth participation in the World Masters Athletics Championships.
The team, which is captained by Eric Shikuku and Elizabeth Muthoka has a contingent of 26 athletes and 8 officials.
