Athletic Kenya (AK) national athletics championships that were planned for April 28 to 30 at Nyayo Stadium have been brought forward to Tuesday April 26-28 while the venue has been changed to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

During the three-day championships, AK will pick Team Kenya for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships programmed for June 8 to 12 in Mauritius.

AK vice-president Paul Mutwii said the federation has changed the date following the death of Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki who will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i announced that Kibaki’s State funeral service will be held on Friday at Nyayo national Stadium before his internment at his Othaya’s home the fnext day.

“The country is mourning the late President and for such this is a State matter where decisions are made at State House. We have requested the Ministry of Sports whether we can change the date of the event so we are waiting for the final communication on Monday,” Mutwii told People Sport.

Mutwii said the national championships cannot be staged later than that.
