AFC Leopards scoop third win as Tusker wallop KCB
By Joel Sang, January 7, 2024
AFC Leopards registered their third win of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League season following a 1-0 victory over Ulinzi Stars at Nyayo Stadium.
Musa Oundo scored the all-important goal for Ingwe, whose league start into the new year ushers in a new impetus for the campaign.
The home side came close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute, but Clifton Miheso’s free-kick hit the crossbar.
However, the former Gor Mahia and Police FC attacker, after being denied by the crossbar, finally managed to produce a cross that enabled Ingwe to take the lead. His cross from a corner kick landed on Oundo’s path, and the midfielder consequently found the back of the net.
Boniface Muchiri, a lethal attacker this season for the 2010 champions, almost equalised in the 77th minute. The former Tusker forward was set through on goal, but he failed to capitalise on the chance with Ingwe’s backline badly overstretched.
Tusker boss KCB
Meanwhile, Tusker were the biggest winners during this matchday action after beating KCB 5-0.
This will be seen as a morale-boosting outcome for the Brewers, who have had a poor season start but have slowly gathered pace, although their title dream for now seems distant.
Erick Kapaito opened the score early on as the Bankers struggled to gain stability. After breaking the deadlock, Kapaito almost created an assist in the 13th minute when he laid the ball in the path of Lawrence Luvanda, but his curling shot was parried away by the goalkeeper.
The former Kariobangi Sharks finally managed to produce an assist after helping Levin Joseph score the second goal for the former champions.
In the 50th minute, Kapaito grabbed his brace after finding the back of the net with a sublime strike.
Late in the second half, KCB conceded a penalty when their goalkeeper brought down Shaphan Oyugi. Kapaito scored from the spot for his hat trick.
The fifth goal was scored by John Njuguna after he was set through on goal by Stewart Omondi.
Zico wins
Meanwhile, Sofapaka managed a 3-0 win over Bidco United.
Batoto ba Mungu recently appointed Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno to replace Ezekiel Akwana as head coach, and his reign started with the desired result.
Jacob Onyango grabbed two goals, while Darius Msagha was also on the scoresheet for the 2009 league champions.
Elsewhere, Murang’a Seal and Kariobangi Sharks shared spoils following a 1-1 draw.
Sharks broke the deadlock a minute after the half-hour mark when Vincent Wasambo scored. Titus Kapchanga equalised for the Premier League debutants after Seal’s goalkeeper gifted him a perfect chance with a spilt ball inside the area.
