2026 World Cross Country Championship: 6 major races scheduled for opening day action
By Luke Oluoch, January 9, 2026Six major racing events have been lined up as the world’s best runners converge at Tallahassee, Florida, for the 46th World Athletics Cross Country Championships on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Day One action.
According to a schedule released by World Athletics on Friday, January 9, 2025, the mixed relay of the 4×2 km race and the U20 teams for both women’s and men’s teams. Will be among the teams in action.
The three events will then be followed up by the senior women’s and men’s races in the 10 km category.
Return to the USA soil
The edition marks the event’s long-awaited return to U.S. soil for the first time in over 30 years and comes with stakes placed at an all-time high for Team Kenya.
The East African seeks to restore its lost glory by reclaiming the championship it last won in 2017 amid a surge of recent dominance from Ugandans.
In the opening day events, the Kenyan women’s U20 duo of Cynthia Chepkirui and Joan Chepkurui will be tasked with the quest for gold as they face off against defending champion Marta Alemayo from Ethiopia.

The reigning champ ventures out to defend her crown at the World Cross Country Championships and will compete alongside her compatriots Wosane Asefa and Yenenesh Shimket.
The events bringing together the world’s best young talents will also see Kenyans contend with opposition from Uganda, an emerging force in the athletics scene.
Confidence levels
The landlocked EA country will be represented by an equally strong team in the race, with Peace Chebet, Felister Chekwemoi, and Nancy Chepkwurui headlining its entry list for the race.
Team Kenya coach Patrick Kivuti, speaking before the team’s departure on Monday, January 5, 2025, exuded confidence that they were raring to go, backed by proper training.
“This time we have a crop of new athletes for the event, but I am confident they are capable of the task and will do what is required of them and do what they achieved in 2017,” he stated.
“If they do what we have been instructing them and as directed, for sure they will bring the title here,” he added.
In the women’s senior race, a matchup pitting Agnes Ngetch against Sharon Chelangat of Uganda is also on the cards. The Women’s World 10km record breaker at 10k Valencia Ibercaja will be up to defend Team Kenya’s title quest.
