Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga showcased his prowess with a stellar performance for Al Duhail, netting two goals in their 5-2 triumph over Muaither in a rescheduled Qatar Stars League match on Wednesday.
The game, held at Hamad Al-Kabeer Stadium, saw Olunga extending his impressive scoring streak. His goals in the eighth and 80th minutes contributed significantly to Al Duhail’s victory, propelling them to 28 points and securing the fifth position in the league standings.
Michael Olunga’s run
With this feat, Olunga has now scored 15 goals in 16 matches and provided two assists, maintaining an impressive goal-scoring rate of one goal every 95 minutes.
In addition to Olunga’s brace, Almoez Ali (40th minute), Philippe Coutinho (46th minute), and Rashid Al Abdulla (89th minute) each added a goal to the scoreboard for Al Duhail.
Muaither managed to find the net through Hugo Gomes (23rd minute) and Ayman El Hassouni (42nd minute).
Muaither displayed resilience by equalizing twice during the match, heading into halftime at 2-2. However, Al Duhail’s relentless attacks in the second half proved too much for their opponents to handle, as they scored three more goals to seal the victory.
Olunga’s early header and subsequent efforts demonstrated Al Duhail’s dominance from the start, with Sultan Al Breik providing the excellent assist. Despite Muaither’s efforts to respond, Al Duhail’s cohesive gameplay and strategic moves, including Coutinho’s goal off an Olunga cross, secured their win.
Olunga joined Al Duhail in January 2021, signing a three-season contract for a reported transfer fee of €6 million.
He marked his debut for the club on January 12, in a 3–1 away loss against Al Sadd. However, he quickly showcased his prowess by scoring a hat-trick on January 25, 2021 in Duhail’s 6–0 victory against Al Ahli in the Emir of Qatar Cup.
Michael Olunga’s early days
Olunga’s stellar performances continued as he finished as the top scorer of the 2021 AFC Champions League.
Despite Olunga’s remarkable contributions, Al-Duhail faced disappointment in the competition, exiting after a 1–1 draw with Al Ahli Saudi in late April, allowing Esteghlal to qualify as group winners.
On May 8, 2023, Olunga played a pivotal role as he and his club secured the 2022–23 Qatar Stars League title, scoring four goals in a 5–2 victory against Al-Shamal.
