Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum, Sports Fund Chief Executive Nuh Ibrahim and Kenya Academy of Sports Chief Executive Doreen Odhiambo have been summoned to appear before MPs tomorrow to shed light on the delays in the construction of sports academies and stadia.
If they fail to comply, they risk being fined KSh500,000.
The lawmakers, who sit on the National Assembly Sports Committee, accused these individuals of being obstacles to the realization of various development projects in the country.
In particular, the frustrated MPs, led by Committee chairperson and Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, expressed concern with Tum (pictured), accusing him of contributing to President William Ruto’s perceived failure due to the delays in constructing the sports academies.
The MPs claimed that despite Ruto pledging to ensure that a sports academy was built in every constituency, this has not been actualized due to Tum’s inaction, causing Ruto to be branded a liar.
The committee’s decision comes after the government announced that it had identified 27 sites for the establishment of sports academies, with the first phase of construction scheduled to commence in the 2023/2024 financial year.
