Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has directed the National Assembly clerk, Samuel Njoroge, and concerned Members of Parliament (MPs) to expedite legislation on labour migration.
Wetang’ula made the comment after attending the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The Speaker also attended a working dinner hosted by the Kenyan diaspora community, led by Kenya’s High Commissioner, Wilson Kogo.
“As the leader of the Kenyan delegation at the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, I joined other Commonwealth countries in marking this event.
“I also directed the Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, and the Members of Parliament present to prioritize legislation related to labour migration, including the Labour Migration Management Bill. By establishing a robust policy framework, we can streamline current processes, address existing challenges, and reinforce our strategic goal of exporting Kenyan labour globally.
“This gathering underscored the importance of Kenya’s socio-economic presence in Australia and the broader region. Our discussions focused on the critical role of the legislature in establishing Kenya’s footprint abroad, with the diaspora raising significant issues that demand immediate attention,” Wetang’ula said in a post on X.
He also touched on the economic impact remittances from Kenyans working abroad have on the country.
“Recognizing the substantial impact of foreign exchange remittances on Kenya’s economy, I committed to championing their concerns, promising to escalate these matters to relevant institutions to facilitate solutions.
“Addressing these needs will empower our diaspora to invest even more in Kenya, which will amplify our economic growth,” he added.
MPs Gonzi Rai (Kinango), Beatrice Adagala (Vihiga), Tim Wanyonyi (Westlands), Zaheer Jhanda (Nyaribari Chache), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), and Njoroge Kururia (Gatundu North) attended the function too.
Senators Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Beth Syengo (nominated), Samuel Njoroge (Clerk of the National Assembly), Steve Apopo (Director, Speaker’s Office), and Njenga Ruge (Director of Legislative and Procedural Services, Senate) were also present.
