Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will spend two more nights in police cell after anti-corruption court in Nairobi failed to grant him bail on Monday.
Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti said he will rule on Wednesday whether to release the city boss on bail or not.
Ogoti also directed that prison department should verify, through a physician, whether Sonko needs hospital admission.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had urged the court to deny the governor bail.
The DPP argued that the governor would interfere with witnesses who are junior officers and employees at the city county government where he is the boss exercising executive authority.
The prosecution further argued that Sonko used his position as the governor to incite some of the county executive committee members from recording statements in other ongoing investigation and as such releasing him on bail will further jeopardize investigations.
“That Sonko is a influential, flamboyant and wealthy public figure with rowdy sycophantic following who on numerous occasions have threatened and demonstrated to act outside the realm of the rule of law,” says the prosecution.
Through James Kihara, the DPP wants the governor detained saying that the governor attempted to escape on Friday, but was arrested in Voi town.
Sonko will be remanded at Industrial Area Police Station ahead of the bail ruling.
