Masengeli’s fate

The former acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli is expected to attract the limelight after he was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Masengeli, who has gone back to his position as Deputy Inspector General of Police for AP after Douglas Kanja’s approval and swearing-in, tried to unsuccessfully fight the sentence given by Justice Lawrence Mugambi.

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, he made desperate last-minute efforts to get the judgement quashed, but Justice Chacha Mwita did not grant Masengeli a reprieve despite a spirited fight from his lawyers, Cecil Miller and Steve Ogolla.

With the seven-day window accorded to Masengeli by Justice Mugambi elapsing by Thursday midnight, eyes will be keen to see what steps the former acting IG will further take.

Eyes on CoG campaigns

47 county chiefs are expected to elect their chairman as Anne Waiguru‘s term as Council of Governors (CoG) boss comes to an end in under a month.

The CoG elections are scheduled to take place on October 7, 2024, and this means the election heat is expected to go up from now.

So far, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and his Wajir counterpart Ahmed Abdullahi have presented their nomination forms for elections.

More are expected to present themselves for the influential position, and that means the campaigns are going to attract considerable attention from now on.

Since Kahiga is seen as an ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, this election could be a test to the United Democratic Alliance’s unity given that some politicians within the party ranks have severed ties with DP and allied themselves with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

Eyes will closely follow how the governors will campaign and eventually vote to see whether the UDA wrangles will play any major role in the CoG elections.
