A Senate committee has summoned Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i and Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho over the delayed payment to officers who carried out Huduma Namba registration.

Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations say more than six months after the completion of the task, those who participated in the exercise have not been paid.

The committee chaired, by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji, will also be seeking to establish the status of the Huduma Namba cards.

The team wants a report tabled before the Senate, to justify the Sh7 billion expenditure on the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) and explain why the issuance and use of the cards have not been affected to date.

“In fact, the question should be after Sh7 billion and the urgency of the Huduma Namba registration, what exactly is the position of the numbers we were supposed to be given and why have the numbers not been given?” asked  Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.

“There is anxiety among Kenyans. We know that in a civilised society, the value for money is very important. We have spent a lot of money.

There is no value for the last six months. It is in order that we get value for our money,” Migori Senator Ochillo Ayacko said during a heated debate on the floor of the House on Thursday.

Kitui Senator Enock Wambua said six months after the conclusion of the exercise no Kenyan had been issued with the Huduma Namba card.
