The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has told Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha that her members have not been prepared on how to teach grade seven and eight pupils who will be joining secondary schools later in the year.
Speaking on Thursday, February 3, KUPPET officials said secondary school teachers have not been taken through the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“As we speak, secondary school teachers have not been trained on how to teach grade seven and eight pupils,” Julius Korir, the National Vice Chairman of the body said.
KUPPET’s Secretary-General Akelo Misori said that CS Magoha is more concerned about the space-grade seven and eight learners will occupy when they join secondary schools instead of whether the teachers are well prepared to teach them.
“The CS is so much concerned about space as we implement the Competency-Based Curriculum. This is something that goes beyond space. We want to see action in the development capacity of our teachers in readiness of grade seven and eight pupils,” Misori said.
The KUPPET SG further said that teachers in secondary schools have not attended capacity building workshops in readiness for the learners and subsequent implementation of CBC.
“This (CBC) is going to be a disaster and we do not want to wait,” Misori said.
