President William Ruto has expressed his astonishment at the rapid transformation in political relationships.
Speaking during a church service at the Anglican Church of Kenya in Bungoma on Sunday, September 1, 2024, Ruto reflected on his recent trip to Nyanza.
Ruto on remarkable shift
He noted the remarkable shift from past conflicts to a newfound camaraderie among previously opposing parties.
Ruto described the change as almost miraculous, highlighting how those who were once on opposing sides now interact as if they have been long-term friends.
He emphasized the importance of building bridges and working together when necessary, praising the unity and progress that can emerge from such collaborations.
“God has blessed us,” Ruto said, quoting Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
He marvelled at how individuals who were at odds just months ago are now engaging in constructive dialogue and cooperation.
“I have just come from a trip in Nyanza and it is amazing what God can do. It’s almost a miracle that the people who were on extreme sides a few months ago, today, are speaking as though as longtime brothers, sisters and friends.
“That is the beauty of our country. That when circumstances demand, we cross ranks as people, forge alliances, build bridges and work together for the greater of our nation,” he stated.
Ruto’s remarks come in the wake of his decision in late July to include members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a broad-based cabinet as a response to nationwide protests.
ODM members appointed include John Mbadi as Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury, Opiyo Wandayi for Energy and Petroleum, Ali Hassan Joho for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, and Wycliffe Oparanya for Co-operatives and MSME Development.
Ruto’s appointments
These appointments were seen as part of Ruto’s efforts to build a more inclusive government. Following the swearing-in of the ODM members, Ruto also endorsed Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission Chairmanship.
Ruto’s visit to Nyanza, a region traditionally supportive of the opposition, was marked by a warm reception, further underscoring the evolving political landscape.
