National Assembly releases results of public participation on motion to impeach Gachagua

The National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula has released the results of the public participation motion to ouster Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office by impeachment.

According to the report of the results released on Thursday, October 10, 2024, Gachagua’s impeachment motion received both support and disapproval from residents in each of the 290 constituencies that responded to the motion.

The countrywide exercise took place on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Disapproval of DP impeachment

The report outlines that in Nyeri County, Mukurweini Constituency had the highest disapproval rate, with 97.42% of participants opposing the Motion.

Similarly, Mathira constituency the area he once represented in Parliament, 96.97% of the constituents voted against his ouster.

“Other constituencies in Nyeri showing significant disapproval included Nyeri Town (96.93%), Kieni (91.77%), Tetu (87.37%), and Othaya (86.54%). Outside Nyeri County, the DP also receive massive support in some areas of Nakuru County, including Subukia (97.16%), and Naivasha (94.94%),” the National Assembly report reads.

Still in the Mount Kenya region, residents from the Counties Murang’a and Kiambu also largely opposed the motion.

“Results from constituencies in Murang’a County included Kigumo (95.40%), Kangema (95.36%), and Kandara (91.38%). Maragwa (82.40%), Gatanga (77.92%), and Mathioya (77.12%). Similarly, in Kiambu County, residents showed strong opposition with Thika Town (78.86%), Githunguri (77.67%), Gatundu North (77.42%), Gatundu South (75.00%), Kikuyu (70.30%), and Ruiru (69.87%),” the report reads.

Gachagua not only received massive support from the Mount Kenya region but also in some parts of Nairobi County and the Eastern region.

“Nairobi constituencies, including Embakasi Central (79.81%), Embakasi North (81.28%), Embakasi South (73.33%), and Starehe (67.22%),”

“In the Eastern region, Kitui Rural Constituency led with 93.36% of participants opposing the Motion. Other constituencies showing similar results included Mwingi North (85.60%), Kibwezi East (67.56%), Kathiani (61.07%), and Matungulu (63.80%),” the report reads.

In support of DP impeachment

According to a report released by the National Assembly on the proposed impeachment motion, residents from some constituencies were in favour of Gachagua’s ouster.

The regions that have the highest support for the motion include Mandera South, Magarini, Balambala, Fafi, Tiaty, Dadaab, Lagdera, Lafey, Ijara and Malindi.

On Tuesday, October 8, the National Assembly impeached Gachagua after 282 MPs voted for the motion, while 44 opposed it, and one MP abstained, effectively setting the ball rolling to the Senate.
