Sportpesa Rugby Sevens National Circuit table leaders, Kenya Harlequin’s head coach Paul Murunga, is eyeing a third National 7s Circuit title as the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) yesterday announced the poolings for the final leg of the Circuit (Prinsloo), set to be played this weekend in Nakuru.
Prinsloo marks the final leg of the Sportpesa Rugby Sevens National Circuit and will be staged in Nakuru this weekend, with all eyes on Paul Murunga’s (pictured) Kenya Harlequin, who have won two legs in extra time against defending national circuit champions KCB.
Speaking earlier in Mombasa after guiding Kenya Harlequin to a 13th Driftwood 7s title last weekend, Murunga remained unfazed by his impressive CV, stating that his focus is still on the final leg in Nakuru, even as circuit defending champions KCB and title contenders Kabras Sugar chase closely behind.
“There is no other way of becoming a champion unless you dislodge the one already at the top. We are going to fight and give it our all on the field of play. There’s nothing left for us but to win this one and bring the title back to Nairobi,” remarked Murunga, who is aiming for a third national 7s Circuit title, having previously won two with Homeboyz in 2016 and 2018.
Quins, who now have 97 points, are top-seeded and placed in Pool A alongside Zetech Oaks (12 points), Menengai Oilers (13 points), and invited Mombasa RFC, who earned just one point during the last leg at the Driftwood 7s, which they hosted.
Defending circuit champions KCB, currently third on the log with 86 points, are in Pool B, where they will face Nondies (49 points), Mwamba (19 points) and Prinsloo hosts Nakuru RFC (38 points).
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), with 52 points, will battle Blak Blad (41 points), Strathmore Leos and Catholic Monks (both with 56 points) in Pool C.
Kabras Sugar, second on the log with 88 points, are in Pool D along with university side Daystar Falcons (40 points), Circuit survivors Kabete Stallions (promoted back at the Christie 7s with 22 points) and newly promoted Kabarak University, who earned their spot last weekend at the Driftwood 7s after four unsuccessful attempts in the finals of Division 2 rugby.
Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar remains a strong contender, ready to capitalize on any slip from Quins to take the title.
