Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Alfred Mutua has called for better training after massive failures in practical assessments.
In a statement shared by the CS on Sunday, October 27, 2024, he noted that over 20,000 Kenyans applied for the 3,000 opportunities which were announced by the government.
However, during the application process, CS Mutua indicated that most of the applicants failed in practical assessments.
Out of the 20,000 candidates, Mutua detailed that 80 per cent failed in technical areas including plumbing, masonry, and electrical work.
Mutua who visited the Kabete National Polytechnic where some of the interviews were conducted detailed that most candidates need proper training in the technical areas due to their demand abroad.
“I have today emphasized the importance of high-quality technical training for Kenyan youth during the ongoing job interviews for positions in Qatar. Nearly 20,000 candidates participated in the interviews, which were extended to accommodate additional applicants vying for 3,000 available roles.
“During my visit to Kabete National Polytechnic, I noted a high failure rate in practical assessments, with 80% of candidates struggling in technical skills like plumbing, masonry, and electrical work. I stressed that these fields hold significant demand, and only proper training can prepare our youth for future success locally and abroad,” Mutua’s statement read in part.
Warns against bribery
While assuring the applicants of the government’s plan to increase the opportunities, he warned the applicants against bribing the officials involved in the recruitment process.
Mutua made it clear that successful applicants will be picked on merit.
“I also urged patience among applicants, emphasized merit in the selection process, and warned against bribery, noting that interviews are free. While 3,000 positions are available now, I assured Kenyans of 5,000 more opportunities in the coming weeks and ongoing efforts to expand job openings locally and internationally,” Mutua’s statement added.
At the same time, Mutua announced that the selected candidates will cover their medical and transport costs. He stated that the government will only assist those without passports to process them faster.
“I reminded selected candidates to cover the costs of their medical tests and travel documents, assuring that the Ministry would assist those who lack passports if they secure employment. We are also exploring ways to decentralize the hiring process, ensuring that recruitment opportunities are accessible across the country, making it easier for all Kenyans to participate.”
