PS Tum: 2025 WRC Safari Rally will position Kenya for investment and tourism
Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum has reaffirmed his resolve to ensure the 2025 WRC Safari Rally not only cements Kenya’s position on the global motorsport calendar but also drives impactful economic gains through prudent resource management and accountability.
Tum, while speaking on Friday, November 29, 2024, in Nairobi, stressed that the government is committed to delivering a rally that prioritizes fan experience, safety, sustainability, and economic value.
“The WRC Safari Rally is more than just motorsport. It’s a strategic economic driver that fosters global partnerships and positions Kenya as a premier destination for investment and tourism.
“We are committed to prudent financial management, aiming to reduce costs while enhancing the quality of the event. This ensures we meet global standards and maintain the rally’s legacy of excellence,” Tum said.
Last year’s event, recognized as the toughest and most-watched rally globally, attracted over 2,300 hotel bookings, significantly boosting the hospitality sector.
He noted the rally provided a platform to spotlight Kenyan talent, with Karan Patel and Tinashe Gatimu emerging as the future’s WRC stars, in line with the department’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent while maintaining the rally’s global prestige.
“We are emphasizing sustainability by integrating initiatives to reduce the rally’s carbon footprint and promote environmental conservation. This approach ensures the Safari Rally contributes positively to both economic and ecological goals,” he added.
Murkomen’s take
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, said the global event gives the country a chance to market itself.
“Its return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar has given us a unique platform to market our country to a global audience besides contributing significantly to local businesses.
“I encourage Kenyans to take advantage of the business opportunities that come with Safari Rally and applaud the various government agencies that are working with the organizers to deliver a memorable event,” he said.
