Police in the city of Kisumu are investigating a burglary at a county hospital.

A gang stormed Lumumba Hospital on Wednesday morning and terrorised new mothers before making away with phones and other personal property.

Investigators are examining how the criminals sneaked into the hospital’s postnatal ward and stole from the mothers.

The incident is said to have occurred between 3am and 4am.

Some of the victims were recovering from surgery.

Police and hospital administrators were investigating the incident, said county Communication and Public Affairs Chief Officer John Oywa.

“They scaled the perimeter wall and stealthily entered the postnatal ward, where they stole from the mothers before escaping into the darkness,” he said.

Hospital administrators and the private security guards on duty that morning had recorded statements with the police, he added.

As a temporary measure, he said, the county department of medical services had begun reinforcing the perimeter wall by installing electric fences.

Security protocols were also being reorganised.

“Disciplinary action will be taken against any officers found to have shown negligence in their duties,” he added.
