Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs has set a date with Abdi Ahmed Mohamud who was recently nominated by President William Ruto to succeed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Twalib Mbarak.
In a notice to the public on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Parliament of Kenya indicated that Abdi will face the committee on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
The vetting exercise will be conducted at County Hall, Parliament Buildings starting at 9:00 am.
“It is notified to the general public that pursuant to Article 118(1)(b)of the constitution and section 6(4) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, Cap. 7F, the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs shall conduct the approval hearing (vetting) of Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, for appointment as Secretary/ CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in the Mini Chamber, 1st floor, County Hall in Nairobi at 9:00 am,” the notice read in part.
Public views
Similar to other appointments in public offices, parliament has asked Kenyans to submit their views on the suitability of Abdi Ahmed to assume office as EACC CEO.
Parliament informed the public that their views should be directed at the clerk of the National Assembly as written statements on oath supported by evidence.
“In compliance with Article 118(1)(b) of the Constitution and Section 6(9) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act Cap. 7F the clerk of the National Assembly hereby invites members of the public to submit any representations they may have by way of written statements on oath (affidavits) with supporting evidence contesting the suitability of the candidate for appointment.
“The memoranda may be forwarded to the clerk of the National Assembly P.O. Box 41842-00100, Nairobi, hand written- delivered to the office of the clerk, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi or emailed to [email protected] to be received before Monday, December 2, 2024, by 5:00 pm,” the notice read in part.
Abdi Ahmed is poised to succeed Twalib Mbarak who has been the CEO of the anti-graft state agency since January 2019 and his six-year term expires in January 2025.
The nominee is the current deputy EACC CEO who is tasked with discharging duties relating to statutory, administrative, and policy responsibilities in the commission’s daily operations and management.
Before rising to the position of deputy CEO, Mohamud served as the Commission’s Director in charge of Investigations for over ten years.
