Eliud Owalo mourns former Harambee Stars captain

Deputy Chief of Staff and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo has led the football fraternity in mourning the sudden death of former Harambe stars and Gor Mahia Captain Austin Oduor Origi.

In a statement published on his social media account on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Owalo described the former captain as a soccer idol, the most disciplined and respected footballer Kenya has ever produced adding that his sudden death is a shocker to the sports fanatics.

“Mourning Austin ‘Makamu’ Oduor unbelievable! It is with profound shock that I have learnt of the sudden death of Kenyan Soccer Legend,Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars award-winning Captain Austin “Makamu” Oduor-a soccer Idol,” Owalo said.

“At this moment of grief, I join the Origi family; friends; relatives; and the entire Kenyan soccer fraternity in mourning one of the best and perhaps most disciplined and respected footballers Kenya has ever produced. Fare thee well Austin “Makamu” Oduor!”

Reminiscing about the last moment they spent together, Owalo disclosed that three days ago the football legend with other former Kenyan Soccer Internationals paid him courtesy call at his rural home in Asembo.

Additionally, Owalo disclosed that they had many initiatives that they pursued together in supporting grassroots soccer activities as well as operationalizing the Gor Mahia Legends’ welfare sustainability fund.

“It is only three days ago that Austin and other former Kenyan Soccer Internationals paid a courtesy call on me at our Gangu Village home in Asembo. I have lost a friend an elder brother, a Guardian and a role model in life,” he added.

“I remember with nostalgia the memorable moments we have spent together with Austin, the guidance I got from him from time to time, the many initiatives we pursued together in supporting grassroots soccer activities, the conceptualization and operationalizing of the Gor Mahia Legends’ welfare sustainability fund;and the plans we had for the future.”

Who is Austin Origi

Austin was a former captain of both Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia .

Oduor famously led Gor Mahia to victory in the 1987 African Cup Winners’ Cup (Mandela Cup).

He was the father of Arnold Origi, who was Kenya’s Harambee Stars goalkeeper for many years. He was brother to Legend Mike Okoth the father of ex-Liverpool striker Divock Origi.
