A day after the National Assembly approved a special motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kapseret Constituency Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has come out to set the record straight on regional political affiliations with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Sudi clarified that the impeachment motion was not approved to alienate the Mt Kenya region.
Sudi argued that the move aimed to get rid of the Second in Command whom he accused of politicking instead of helping President William Ruto deliver on his mandate.
“The Mountain hasn’t been touched, it’s an individual who is paying for his misdeeds. When found guilty, own your actions and carry your own burden, not the community,” Sudi’s statement read in part.
“Too much politicking derails the government’s development agenda,” he added.
Gachagua’s fall
Before Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse tabled the impeachment motion, Gachagua’s brand of politics majorly focused on the Mt Kenya region.
The DP in his two-year term advocated for Mt Kenya’s interests and pushed for the shareholding agenda. The same rhetorics formed part of the 11 grounds that were presented in the National Assembly seeking to eject him from office.
His incessant defence of the Mt Kenya region coined the phrase ‘Usiguse Mrima (do not touch the mountain).’ However, during the voting session, even some MPs from the Mt Kenya region voted to approve the impeachment motion.
Date with senate
Following the approval of the impeachment motion, Gachagua is expected to face the Senate in plenary next week after a motion to form a committee failed.
As a result, the matter is now scheduled for a plenary hearing on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, and Wednesday Thursday 17, 2024 next week.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has since directed Gachagua to submit his responses by Monday, October 14, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
