Olunga reveals 4 key abilities Harambee Stars’ new call-up possess
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has revealed key four aspects Tobias Knost has after his inclusion in the national team set-up.
Knost is among the new players in the Harambee Stars camp, preparing for World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast in June. Kenya will host both games in Malawi as home facilities are closed and undergoing renovation.
Knost’s abilities, Olunga says, are what the national team wants, especially now that key defenders will not be available.
“Congratulations to him for receiving this call-up; we hope he can earn his debut for the national team. It will be an honor for him to represent our country, so we welcome him to the team. He is a good player with the ball, very athletic and versatile, and he can play different positions.
“This is what we want from these kinds of players because we want players who can be used in whatever positions the coach wants, and I think he is going to be a valuable addition now that we have lots of problems in defense with a lot of injuries, and everybody is hoping to see the best he can offer the country,” Olunga told the press.
Aiming for goals
Olunga has recently been on a good goal-scoring run for both Al Duhail SC and Kenya, and he hopes the streak continues.
“As a striker, you always want to be there for the team. I always want to score, but in football, you are only as good as your last tournament,” Olunga stated.
“The Four Nations tournaments are done and dusted. Now it is a new game. Two games back to back. I still want to continue scoring for this country. I want to continue scoring goals for this country,” he added.
The former Thika United and Gor Mahia striker is closing in on Dennis Oliech’s national record of 34 goals, and he hopes to deliver again when given a chance.
“If given an opportunity by the coach, I will continue to do my best to try and help the team secure victory,” Olunga concluded.
Meanwhile, only the top team in the group, consisting of Ivory Coast, Gabon, Burundi, The Gambia, Seychelles, and Kenya, will secure direct qualification. Four of the best runners-up from the nine groups will compete in a playoff, determining CAF’s representative in the inter-confederation playoffs involving six teams and ultimately deciding the last two FIFA World Cup berths.
