More than 3,000 trainers have been deployed to technical vocational education and training schools (TVETs) to enhance technical education.

More trainers will ease the financial burden on TVET boards, said TVET Principal Secretary Esther Mworia.

Speaking at Keroka Technical Training Institute in Kisii County when it held its inaugural graduation, Mworia urged principals of the institutions to request the number of trainers they need.

“We have 1,300 trainers, have employed 2,000 more and distributed them across the country,” Mworia said when 1,768 students graduated from certificate, artisan and diploma courses.

Money saved from deploying trainers will be used to buy learning materials and improve infrastructure, she said.

She challenged trainers to embrace more practicals in line with the competency-based curriculum.

She urged trainers to shun using old notes, warning that the government will not condone lazy and incompetent trainers and principals.

“We train, examine and certify our students. They can employ themselves or work in industries,” Mworia noted.

The government, she said, has partnered with more than 1,800 industries to train 50 per cent of the students and asked more youths to join TVETS to benefit.
