It was a pleasant early Christmas for James Mwendia, born 22 years ago with cerebral palsy, after Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirichi handed him a decent house she built for him.

Mwendia, an orphan who hails from Gacigoni village in Ngariama ward, was all smiles as he moved to his new home from the streets of the nearby Kiamatugu market where he has been living.

After losing his mother Agnes Wangu on May 26, Mwendia was left with no caregiver and consequently dropped out of Kianyambo School for the Specially Challenged.

On July 26, while donating water pipes to various women groups from the ward, Ngirichi spotted Mwendia in the midst of the gathering while in a wheel chair.

“On seeing a smiling young man on a wheel chair I quickly pushed through the crowd and embraced him as tears rolled down my cheeks on realising what a man he would have grown into had it not been for the severe attack on his vital body parts,” The woman rep recalled on Thursday.

Mwendia, who is speech handicapped, is digital compliant since his first meeting with Ngirichi and has maintained social media contact with her.

During the colourful hand-over ceremony, area residents thanked Ngirichi for her kind gesture after she said Mwendia would be placed on a Sh5,000 monthly stipend for his upkeep.

The county MP also instructed technicians to install electricity in the house, which will also have pipe water and a modern toilet.

Meanwhile, Ngirichi has said she will only support the BBI report if it does not burden Kenyans further.
