Wiper leader downplays Uhuru-Ruto meeting
As the surprise visit between President William Ruto and his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta continues to send shockwaves among Kenyans, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday allayed fears that the two had entered into a political pact.
While the Ichaweri village meeting stirred questions about the political future of the Mt Kenya region and the country, Musyoka insisted that Uhuru-Ruto were not up for any political partnership and instead, Uhuru agreed to stand out for the country.
Addressing congregants at AIPCA St Gachukia at Gathage village in Gatundu South, the former vice president took issue with Ruto for failing to disclose all the discussions and instead took advantage of the meeting to seek political mileage.
“I fully understand my brother Uhuru who must rise above every other person, being the fourth president. The two released parallel statements after the meeting and among the discussions, as made clear by Uhuru, was how to establish a vibrant opposition to keep the current regime in check,” said Musyoka.
The December 9 surprise meeting has sparked a major political debate, with observers claiming that it might come with serious political ramifications for 2027 presidential aspirants.
While pundits say Musyoka and impeached deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are on a mission to send Ruto home come 2027, the two are reported to have failed to meet Uhuru despite spirited efforts. With this recent development, political commentators say that the duo’s political plans could crumble as the meeting could have been a broader strategy to counter their seemingly growing influence in the Mt Kenya region.
Major coalition
Even as Musyoka assuaged his enthusiasts, his allies took to the podium to claim that the former president had okayed the formation of a strong coalition to oust Ruto. Former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu told adherents at the packed sanctuary that Uhuru had acquiesced with the formation of a major alliance that would bring on board political bigwigs in an effort to dethrone Ruto.
The political coalition, according to Waititu, will incorporate among others the second deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Defence cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa, governor George Natembeya, Richard Onyonka among others.
“The coalition we are forming from next year will bring on board everybody and former President Uhuru Kenyatta has already given us his blessings. Don’t panic, come 2027 and early in the morning, Ruto will be at home,” said Waititu.
Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who joined Musyoka, took issue with the government over alleged state capture, femicide and abandoning the rule of law to remain in power.
“The impunity you see is because the country has abandoned the rule of law. We need Musyoka to get this country back to where it belongs,” noted Njiru.
He at the same time fingered Ruto for reportedly failing to reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for selfish reasons
