Winnie Odinga expresses gratitude to Kenyans mourning her father

Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, has extended her deepest gratitude to Kenyans for their unwavering support and condolences following the passing of her father, the former Kenyan Prime Minister.

In a message on her Facebook page on Saturday, October 18, 2025,  moments before Raila’s body left Kisumu, Winnie reacted to the mourners who turned up in numbers at Kisumu Mamboleo grounds to pay homage to her father.

She equally acknowledged the many who have affirmed solidarity with the family, through condolences messages from beyond Kenya’s frontiers..

“To the thousands of Kenyans who have stood with us, who have come to pay their respects, who are mourning with us across the nation and the world, we see you,” she said.

Winnie termed the massive outpouring of emotions as an expression of the people’s love for her father.

“We feel your love. Thank you for honouring him. Thank you for respecting him even in his death.Your strength is giving us strength… JOWI!!,” she said.

Her remarks came just after Raila’s remains awaited being airlifted from Kisumu to his rural home in Bondo.

The final leg of the late Prime Minister’s farewell journey followed after a public viewing at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, ended at around 3 pm.

Oburu’s plea

Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, October 17, 2025, Oburu called on mourners to uphold peace and respect as they pay their final respects to a man he described as deeply loved by his people.

“I appeal to our people to be peaceful. I know the pain you feel, but this is not the time to do anything that could cause harm to our people,” Oburu said, his tone heavy with emotion. “We want to behave with dignity. We want our people to respect this occasion because Raila loved them so much, and they should also treat his send-off with dignity,” Oburu added.

Raila’s burial will take place in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
